Professor Olanike Adeyemo had Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and postgraduate trainings (MVPH and Ph.D.) at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. Prof. Adeyemo pioneered scholarship and leadership in “One Health”, an innovative transdisciplinary research that cuts across traditional boundaries and paradigms to create novel conceptual, methodological, and translational innovation at the environment-livestock-wildlife-human interface. Her findings from studies on environmental pollution, food safety /anti-microbial resistance, and emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases provides credible transdisciplinary research-backed evidence on the complex linkage between Environmental, Animal and Human Health with significant policy implication for Nigeria, the African Continent and indeed the rest of the world. Professor Olanike Adeyemo has over 110 publications in learned journals, and has been widely cited based on her diversified research activities that established the contamination of Nigeria’s aquatic system by lead and produced reference database for pollution using GIS technology, Spatial Analysis and GIS modelling. She has also linked ecotoxicology to epidemiology of diseases in fish and wildlife; public health risk associated with food safety and contact with infectious diseases. Professor Adeyemo holds the administrative position of Pioneer Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Strategic Partnerships) at the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria (March 2017-March 2021).
- Principal Investigator, Improving Biosecurity: A Science-based Approach to Manage Fish Disease Risks and Increase the Socio-economic Contribution of the Nigerian Catfish and Tilapia Industries. The goal of the project is therefore, to improve aquatic animal biosecurity and health management in the Nigerian aquaculture sector, using a science-based approach with cutting edge scientific and digital tools. The project is being executed in partnership with WorldFish, Malaysia and Mississippi State University, Mississippi, USA.
- Principal Investigator, Antimicrobial Resistance: The Fish, Human and Environment Nexus. The goal of this study is to evaluate aquaculture as driver of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) by elucidating the link between antibiotic resistance genes present in aquaculture products, water for aquaculture and water for human use in Nigeria.
- Principal Investigator, Ecology and Evolution of Monkeypox Virus (MPV). In a changing world, alterations in climate, weather patterns, human population density, and land use are all predicted to have major effects on rodent populations and hence, transmission of the pathogens they carry to humans. This project focuses on how MPV is maintained over time and space in rodent populations within endemic landscapes, how the prevalence fluctuates under natural conditions, seasonal and meteorological drivers for the incidence and prevalence of MPV in wildlife and human population.
